Our Ty-Boy turned 12 this week, so we spoiled him with some homemade dog treats for his birthday. I guess I mentioned one time that I thought his birthday was in March, and my daughter has spent the past 9 months looking forward to throwing him an amazing doggie birthday party. Yesterday was the last day of March, so it had to be done!
I made this recipe up with all of his favorite foods in mind… though his palate isn’t too refined when I consider the many poopy diapers he’s eaten over the years. All the ingredient are nice and healthy, and they turned out quite delicious for both 2 and 4 legged friends.
Homemade Dog Treats
Mix the flour, oats, grated apple, grated carrots and cinnamon together. In a separate bowl mix the remaining ingredients. Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix well. Wet your fingers with a little water (to prevent sticking) and form the dough however you would like. I made one large bone for Ty’s birthday cake, then made some smaller treat-size cookies. To make the paw-print, mound about 2 Tbs of dough, flatten, then press your fingers to make the indents.
Bake them at 350F for about 30 minutes. They will just start to brown on the bottoms, but will still be a little moist.
Ty tends to gulp most food down whole without chewing, so I made these just big enough that he has to work at it.
I piped a little freshly whipped cream on his birthday bone cake, just because.
You’ve been a great dog, Ty. I’m glad we took the time to celebrate you! I know it was confusing when we brought the babies home from the hospital, but you’ve adjusted well and become a faithful friend to them. It’s hard to say if you’ll still be around next year, which is why I’m taking extra good care of you these days. We love you!
